Caleb John: Weeks 7-10

Can you believe it? Caleb turned 10 weeks old last week. Happy 10 weeks, Baby Boy! (Since my last post was at six weeks, this one covers weeks seven through ten.)

Caleb 7 WeeksCaleb continues to be a pretty easy baby. He loves his family and is smiling at us all more and more. He’s happiest when Mommy or Daddy is holding him, but is also content to sit and watch his sisters sing and dance. He doesn’t even seem to mind it too much when they get right in his face, which they do on a frequent basis. He’s not quick to cry, but when he does, you know it’s coming because first makes you feel guilty by sticking out his lower lip like this….

DSC_2646Caleb is very “talkative” and we have long conversations on a daily basis. (See below for a photo of him telling me a story during our photo shoot.) He’s very earnest in his “oooos” and “mmmms” and “ungs”. Not sure if “ung” is a normal baby word, but it’s one of his favorite sounds. Probably it means, “feed me”.

DSC_2652And we do feed him, quite regularly, which is probably why he’s such a big boy. He hasn’t been in for his 2 month well child check, so I don’t have any firm stats, but the fact that he’s too big for some of his 3-6 month clothes gives you an idea of how quickly he’s growing.

Caleb 8 WeeksHe continues to be a good sleeper, taking several naps every day and then sleeping for a nice stretch at night. He zonks out around 8pm, gets up between 4 and 5am to eat and then goes back to bed until 6:30 or 7am when he’s awake and ready to get on with the day. It’s still earlier than I like to get moving, but I figure he’s really doing me a favor by prepping me for our upcoming earlier mornings that will have to happen when Alethea heads off to kindergarten in a couple weeks.

DSC_3020These last four weeks included Caleb’s first speed boat ride. Spoiler alert, he LOVED it! Despite the wind in his face and having to wear a life jacket, he only started crying when the boat slowed down. He’s a total motion junkie. He also cries in the car any time we come to a stop sign or stoplight. His car ride preferences seem to be having the radio turned up loud and the faster and curvier the road, the better. I’m actually just a little nervous about the idea of him EVER driving. Especially because the thing he hates more than anything else in the world is being buckled up securely in his car seat. Sigh…

Caleb 9 WeeksOne very special moment these past few weeks was Caleb’s baby dedication at church where Peter and I thanked God for the gift of Caleb’s life and committed to raising him in an environment that exposes him to the Gospel of Christ at every turn. We do feel so blessed to be Caleb’s parents and were glad for the opportunity to publicly dedicate him to the Lord.

One of the reasons we chose the name Caleb was because Caleb in the Bible, the Israelite spy, chose to believe God’s promises rather than give into the fears of the people around him. We pray that our Caleb will always remember to trust God’s word, even when others tell him it’s unreasonable.

DSC_3242Other milestones during this period were Caleb’s first time laughing (which is a sweet, sweet sound). His neck and head control continue to improve and he’s starting to reach for things and to play with his hands when he doesn’t have anything else to grasp at. The girls love it when he does this and they say, “Caleb’s praying!” The other day at breakfast when we were done saying grace before the meal, Caleb continued to have his hands folded. Lydia looked at him in exasperation and said, “Amen. We’re done praying, Caleb! A-MEN!”

Caleb 10 WeeksSo that’s where we are right now. We’re starting to be on the lookout for his first time rolling over. He’s also been drooling a lot, so we’re wondering if teeth are on the near horizon, although I sort of hope not. We’re also thinking about moving him to his own room, since he’s still sleeping in ours and is getting noisier all the time. He’s still swaddled for sleeping, won’t take a pacifier unless you hold it in his mouth, and is a bit spitty, although we’ve avoided reflux medications by my not eating garlic, onions, and anything spicy.

DSC_3386And now on to week 11… He goes in for his check-up this week and we’ll find out just how big he’s gotten. He is growing up too fast, but he’s still a baby for now and I’m soaking up every moment I can with my boy. Love you, Caleb!

Little Moments

The other day I had Caleb on the changing table when Alethea marched into the room. She watched me finish up the diaper change, then asked, “Mommy, did you want three babies?”

“Yes, I definitely did,” I told her.

She looked at me doubtfully as I disposed of the diaper. “Why did you want three babies?” she wondered, “That’s a lot of work.”

Yes, it is a lot of work. And if I’m honest there are times when I feel a little nostalgic for my pre-kid days. No diapers, less laundry, and more importantly no one having a melt-down because I gave them the wrong spoon, or because I refused to get bogged down in the specific details of their requested Angelina Ballerina Halloween costume, because IT’S ONLY JULY FOR GOODNESS SAKE! True story.

Yeah, I could do without that. But I suppose those drive-me-up-a-wall crazy moments are a small price when I also get to live moments like this one, the girls learning to play Rock, Scissors, Paper with Daddy…

DSC_2544And this one, Caleb’s first time playing dress-up with his sisters…

photo(7)And this one, Alethea and Lydia building a sand castle while discussing all the princesses that are going to live in it…

DSC_2524Yup, three babies is a lot of work. But I’m so thankful for each one of them. They are little blessings, even on the hard days.

Caleb John: Weeks 4, 5 and 6

My how time flies. Caleb turned six weeks old last Wednesday. Crazy!

Since his last update was at three weeks, this post covers weeks 4-6. They were busy ones, including his first time at the beach, his first real big smiles, and his first out of state trip to visit Great Grandma and Grandpa for the 4th of July.

DSC_1978He also had his one-month well-check and his current stats are: height 22.5 inches, weight 13 lbs 2 oz, and head circumference 41 cm. That puts him in the 84th percentile for height, 97th for weight, and (do I even need to say it) 99th for head circumference. He’s a solid little fellow!

DSC_2047

Caleb continues to be a pretty easy baby. He sleeps well at night, usually doing a 5 or 6 hour stretch at one point or another. He also takes multiple 2-3 hour naps during the day as long as we are at home. However, he doesn’t sleep much when we are out and about, and if he’s not sleeping he wants to be held or kept in constant motion, so he’s not the most portable baby ever. But really, as long as he sleeps at night, I’m okay with whatever we need to do to get through the daylight hours, though I wouldn’t be upset if at some point he decides that 6:30am isn’t time to get up and at ’em.

Caleb 5 WeeksWe’re finding more and more that Caleb is a pretty social baby. When he’s awake he wants to be where he can see people. He will also holler at me if I’m not in the room when he’s going to sleep. He doesn’t usually need to be rocked or have me sing him a song, but I must be present until he starts to drift off.

DSC_2227He’s smiling more often now and with bigger expression, and it never fails to make my day. We also enjoy conversations with each other. His side consists mainly of “Oh!” and “Mmmm”, but he seems genuinely pleased with himself for communicating so well.

Caleb 6 WeeksMommy is definitely his favorite person, but I’m confident at this point that he also recognizes Peter. He really likes attention from Alethea and Lydia as well, although I’m not as confident that he would be able to differentiate between them and any other children, but maybe.

DSC_2347He still doesn’t love it when they “hold” him though…

DSC_2360His favorite things are eating, sleeping, taking baths, being swaddled and going outside. He doesn’t mind diaper changes anymore. He still won’t take a pacifier, so I’ve pretty much given up on that. Being buckled into his carseat is on the top of his “Things I’d Rather Not Do” list.

DSC_2325But overall, he’s a good-natured baby and we’re having fun getting to know him better as his personality emerges bit by bit. As the girls would put it, “We love our Sweet Baby K!”

4th of July Pictures

We spent most of the 4th of July holiday weekend visiting my grandparents in Iowa. This isn’t going to be a long post, because it’s late and I should go to bed, but I wanted to get some pictures up before it’s long past the event.

Can you believe that I actually managed to be organized enough to pack red, white and blue outfits for the kids and no one managed to soil their clothes before we sat everyone on the front steps to snap a few pictures? It was a 4th of July miracle!

DSC_2065Ignore my arms in the next photo. The girls decided it was too hard to hold Caleb and wave flags at the same time.

DSC_2070We spent a large portion of the 4th at the pool. The girls thought it was great, although they were actually a bit cold when they had to get out of the water since it was pretty windy. I thought it was perfect though since I was wearing Caleb in his baby carrier. I’ve never been much of a baby wearer, but I really enjoyed the fact that I could keep Caleb close to me and still walk around a play photographer at the same time. Maybe I’ll become a baby carrier convert yet.

DSC_2120 DSC_2074We let the kids stay up late to go sit in a field next to the fairgrounds and watch the fireworks. Everyone enjoyed them. Even Caleb thought they were intriguing. We thought he might cry when they started, but he just looked and looked, right up until the end when they shot off a bunch at once and then he decided it was too loud for his liking, so we covered his ears for him.

And of course, the best part of the trip was getting to spend time visiting with Grandma Ruth and Grandpa Jim, and eating all of the delicious food Grandma cooked up for us. The girls were especially pleased to be served dessert with every meal. I should have taken a picture of the homemade strawberry ice cream and star shaped sugar cookies, but alas, I was too excited to taste it to bother finding my camera, so you’ll just have to imagine. Yum!

I did get a picture of the kids with their great grandparents though, which is really more important.

greatgrandparentsThanks again for a great time, Grandma and Grandpa! The girls are already talking about everything they want to do “next time” in Iowa.

Hope everyone else had a great weekend too!

Caleb John: Weeks 2 and 3

Today Caleb turned three weeks old. Happy three weeks, Caleb!

Since I didn’t get around to posting last Wednesday, this update is covering weeks two and three of our little guy’s first month.

Caleb 2 WeeksOverall, these last two weeks have gone well. Caleb continues to sleep well and is becoming less fussy about routine daily occurrences like diaper changes and getting dressed. He rarely cries over those things anymore unless he’s impatient to begin his next meal. He can sometimes even get himself to sleep without needing to be soothed.

Caleb 3 WeeksThe only down side has been that he’s been spitting more and more as the days go by. He definitely has some degree of reflux. It seems to help quite a bit if I don’t eat things with garlic, onion and peppers in them, but even then he often cries and spits up after meals. I’m trying to decide if I need to do an elimination diet to find out if he’ll benefit from me cutting out other foods. Alethea definitely did better when I went off of dairy, so that may be something I should try eliminating. Just trying to work up the resolve to do it.

DSC_1614On the social front, he’s definitely been becoming more alert during his awake periods. He’s smiled at people a few times, although still not with any regularity. He doesn’t show many signs of recognizing Peter, Alethea or Lydia yet. He does know who feeds him though. The other night Peter was holding him and sitting next to me on the couch. Caleb, with his mouth wide open, kept throwing himself over to the side, trying to land in my lap. It was pretty hilarious!

The beginning of week two was when Caleb lost his umbilical cord and had his first at-home full-body bath. Getting into the water seemed to surprise him at first, but then he relaxed. In the end, I’d say he really loved it… all except the getting out part. But I can’t blame him, it’s not fun being cold and wet.

DSC_1544In general we’re continuing to do well in adjusting to our new daily schedule. It helps that Caleb is moving toward eating every two and a half to three hours instead of every two like during week one. That’s given me just a bit more time to do things with the girls and get things done around the house. And Caleb seems to find being outside very soothing, which is good, since it’s summer and that’s where the girls and I often want to be.

Caleb testI think that’s all the Caleb news for this week. I am looking forward to his one-month check up to find out how much he’s grown, although it seems impossible that he’s already going to be a whole month old next week. How in the world did that happen?

Lydia and Caleb

This morning there was some gorgeous light coming in Caleb’s bedroom window, and I thought the girls were sound asleep, so I pulled out my camera to snap a few quick pictures for his birth announcement before they woke up. We just got started when the door opened and Lydia ran in.

So you might have to wait a while longer to see his birth announcement, but in the mean time, here’s a cute shot of Caleb and his big sister, Lydia.

CalebandLydiaHappy Monday!

Caleb’s One Week Update

Caleb John turned one week old on Wednesday. Happy Birthday, Caleb!

When I told Alethea that Caleb was turning one week old, she wondered if we would have a party. No party, but we did do a photo session with my little muscle bound man…

Caleb 1 WeekCaleb had his first well-child check-up and at six days old he was 9lbs 9oz, 21.25 inches and had a 38 cm head circumference. That puts him in the 92nd percentile for weight and 94th for height. And naturally he’s in the 99th percentile for head circumference, because he is a Bobble Head Baby.

His pediatrician declared him “perfect” and said that since he’s doing well and already made it back to his birth weight plus an ounce, she doesn’t need to see him again until he’s one month. Yay!

DSC_1317And he is doing really well. He eats a lot (every 2 hours during the day) and is sleeping well during the night. I feed him before I go to bed around 10:30 or 11pm and then he does a 3am feed and a 6am feed and then gets up with the girls and me around 8 or 9am. I’m officially calling that up two times during the night, despite the fact that Peter says 6am doesn’t count as a night time feed. But whatever, I’m never up at 6am if I can possibly help it, so I’m counting it as two.

During the day he has an awake period in the morning and then around dinner time and one more during the late evening. He does prefer to be held when he’s awake, but he’s generally pretty good if you need to put him down for a bit.

And here is his “who are these people and please tell me I’m not related to them” expression…

DSC_1305Sorry kiddo, you are related to us. I think he most strongly resembles Alethea at this point, other than the fact that he has deep stormy gray eyes, as opposed to her bright blue. The resemblance is especially strong when they both are wearing their contemplative faces…

DSC_1377It can’t be all bad being related to us though. He’s got the whole family, sisters included, wrapped around his little baby fingers. The other night at bedtime, when we asked Alethea what the best part of her day was, she replied, “Seeing my baby brother.” Then she added, “That’s always the best part of my day now.”

Lydia thinks he’s pretty great too and will hover around him saying his name over and over and trying to get him to look at her. I’m excited for him to start smiling and laughing. I’m sure the girls are going to love that!

DSC_1400So far we’ve discovered that Caleb likes eating, sleeping, Mommy, and having his hair washed. He does not like being naked, having his diaper changed, or being asked to wait when he wants to nurse. He is deeply offended if you offer him a pacifier.

DSC_1499There you go. Our sweet Caleb John’s first week in a nutshell. Now on to week two…

This and That

Just a few not necessarily congruent thoughts on the last week…

We are home from the hospital. And so glad to be home. Peter and the girls surprised me and Caleb with a balloon bouquet on the mailbox for our homecoming. It was very sweet and the girls were super proud of themselves for their part in the plan.

DSC_0925Caleb continues to be a pretty easy baby. He likes to eat and he likes to sleep. And we like that he likes it.

DSC_1002The girls absolutely adore Caleb. They want to constantly give him hugs and kisses. So far there doesn’t seem to be any resentment towards him. Peter and I have had some emotional turmoil directed toward us however.

DSC_0905We have been trying to do some fun things that aren’t all about Caleb as a way of keeping peace in the house. One of those is the introduction of a bike trailer as a fun daddy/daughter activity for Peter and the girls. The girls have decided that it is their “carriage”. When Peter told me about their terminology, he added, “You know what that makes me, right?”

DSC_0960Some people have asked if Caleb’s nickname is going to be C.J. and the answer is that we are planning on just calling him Caleb. Alethea and Lydia however call him “Baby Brother”, “Baby Caleb”, or just “Baby K”. I actually favor the later as a nickname since it hints at a future career as a hip hop artist.DSC_1017

Overall, this first week of being a mother to three has gone as well as I could have hoped and better than I expected. I’m hoping that as we enter week two, we’ll be able to settle into a bit more of a routine and tame some of the emotional upheaval the girls seem to be experiencing.

Planning to take one-week pictures of Caleb tomorrow. In the mean time, enjoy these of the girls playing outside this afternoon…

Thanks for stopping by!

24 Hour Update

Caleb is nearly 24 hours old now and I am completely in love with this little guy! Not only is he a total cutie, but thus far he’s been eating and sleeping like a champ.

DSC_0516He reserves crying for something really offensive like when he managed to scratch himself on the cheek, or when the doctor took of his clothes and he got cold. Other than that, he’s either eating, sleeping, or looking around with a slightly perplexed look on his face.

DSC_0839Big sister Alethea thinks Caleb is great. She’s only upset that I’m not coming home at night and bringing him with me. This morning she was crying because I’d decided to spend one more night in the hospital, so she declared she was going to stay overnight too. When I pointed out that there was only one bed, she decided that she was going home to get her sleeping bag and would camp out on the floor.

DSC_0606Lydia has been going back and forth on whether having Caleb around is a good thing. When she arrived to visit this morning, she ran right over to him, smiling and cooing. Then a little later she declared that she didn’t want to be his big sister. Then another while later, she was holding him and giving him kisses.

DSC_0631Regardless of Lydia’s wavering opinion, Peter and I agree that he’s a keeper!

DSC_0602We love every bit of his 20.5 inches…

DSC_0821Including his goofy faces…

DSC_0808We’ll be headed home tomorrow morning after we get through discharge. Alethea is so excited to surprise him by showing him his room! Hope he likes it!
