Wanted: Fabulous Business Cards

Today was the second day of a conference for piano teachers that I attended.  As always happens after one of these events, my brain is full of new things to try with my students and a to-do list of ways to improve my studio.

Now I’m not going to lie, I’m usually one of the younger people in the room at these events.  Not sure if people in their 20s aren’t teaching piano lessons or if they just don’t go to conferences, but there is a lot of gray hair to be seen.  That’s why I was really glad to make a new teacher friend today, someone who is about my age, lives not too far away and actually has a 2 year old daughter.  She gave me her business card and asked for mine.  I don’t have cards, but I did make a mental note, “Must look into getting business cards.”

Then low and behold, I visit www.withtwocats.com and what is Lauren giving away this week, free stationery!  Perfect timing!  If I can only win this contest, I’ll get these beauties:

I just love ’em!

Eleven Years and Three Days

A few days ago we realized that we didn’t really have any specific plans for this long weekend and after looking at a weather forecast full of rain, we decided that Saturday morning would be a perfect time to visit Sea Life at the Mall of America.  Sort of like going to the zoo, but faster and we knew we wouldn’t get rained on.

Turns out today was gorgeous!  Totally perfect in every way kind of weather.  But stuck to our plan and went to the aquarium anyway.

Alethea liked the eye-level displays:

Alethea did put her hand in the “petting zoo” water, but didn’t want to touch the starfish:

Lydia liked walking through the aquarium tunnels.  She was making lots of noises.  I’m pretty sure she was trying to talk to the fish:

Not sure this guy looks like he’s in the mood for a conversation anyway:

The sea turtle was more friendly looking, but still declined to comment:

After completing our tour of Sea Life, we went to the food court for lunch.  It was then that I realized we were about to go by the very spot where Peter and I first met.  It was the spring of 2000 on that fateful day when we saw each other outside of Golf Mountain, where we were gathering with a group of friends to go mini-golfing.

I told Peter, “I think it must be about eleven years and one month since we met.  Didn’t we go mini-golfing sometime in April?”

“No,” replied Peter, “It was about eleven years and a week ago.”  And then after another second’s thought, “Actually, it was eleven years and three days ago, because it was the Wednesday before Memorial Day that we first met.”

How is it that he can remember that, but I have to put a post-it note on the garage door to get him to take his lunch to work?  Funny boy!

An Emergency Room Adventure

Let me start by saying that we are all okay, but yeah, we did go to the E.R. last night.

Yesterday, Alethea was kind of cranky, but not so bad that I suspected anything was wrong.

Then last night at about 1:30am I woke to horrible screaming.  I jumped out of bed and ran to Alethea’s room to find her holding on to the crib rail, shaking badly and shrieking at the top of her lungs.  I picked her up and she calmed down for a few seconds and then suddenly she let out another ear-splitting cry and began trembling all over once again.

Needless to say, I was frightened.  I don’t think I’ve ever experienced something as awful as holding my feverish, shrieking child who is convulsing in my arms.

I carried Alethea into our room, woke up Peter and told him I was taking Alethea to the E.R.  So he got up and calmly started getting dressed.  I was panicking, trying to figure out how to leave the house when I was holding Alethea, needed to get dressed and had a sleeping 4 month-old in the next room.

I once heard that during a crisis 10% of people act calmly and keep their heads, 10% freak out and make things worse and 80% just freeze and don’t do anything.  I froze.  “Help! I don’t know what to do!” I told Peter, “Should I call my mom?”  (Yes, I’m 29 years old and I still want my mom when I’m scared.)  Peter said, “We’ll just take Lydia with us.” Then he took Alethea from me so I could get dressed too.

We got out the door, into the car and started driving down the street.  Alethea was in the back.  She began calmly talking about how it was dark, how Daddy was driving Mommy’s car and various other topics.  Suddenly I felt kind of silly for taking her to the E.R.  I looked at Peter and asked, “I’m over-reacting, aren’t I?”

“Maybe, just a bit,” he said wryly.

But we were half-way there and I still was frightened by the shaking and screaming of 15 minutes earlier, so on we went.

We got to the hospital, checked in, saw the triage nurse, and were shown to our bed.  Alethea did have a fever and elevated heart rate, but other than that, she was doing well.  The doctor came in and diagnosed her with an ear infection and told us that the trembling was almost certainly chills from the fever, not a seizure since Alethea was making noise at the time.  Apparently screaming is actually a good sign.

Alethea was given some Tylenol, a freezie pop and a prescription for antibiotics.  After filling the prescription, we went home and back to bed.

So now all that remains is to wait for the bill.

My guess is that was one expensive freezie pop!

Happy Birthday, Peter!

Wednesday was Peter’s birthday.  Like everything else in my life at the moment, I’m a little behind the times, so…

Happy happy birthday to you, Peter!  Do you realize that since we’re almost 30 that means we’ve been together for about a decade now?  Kinda crazy how time flies.

Anyway, I want to write you a happy birthday blog post and I totally know how much you hate anything sappy, so I’ll do my best not to gush…

But I have to tell you that I think you are my perfect match and I’m so glad you wanted to marry me.  You keep me sane when I overbook myself, you calm my fears when I’m being a worry-wart, and you tell me it’s good enough when I try too hard to make things exactly right.  And how is it possible I found someone who loves both baseball and music even more than I do?

I know life is has gotten a bit predictable now that we have two kids, two cars and a mortgage, but there isn’t a person on this planet that I would trade places with.

I love you so much!  And here’s to another decade together!  Cheers!

A Post from Philly

Hello from the city of brotherly love!  I got here on Friday afternoon and since then it’s been a whirlwind of activity.  I’ve visited friends, re-learned how to parallel park and eaten the best grilled cheese sandwich on the planet courtesy of the South Philly Tap Room on 15th and Mifflin.

Of course, I also went to my friend Katie Jo’s wedding, which was beautiful.  And her block-party reception which was lots of fun despite a little rain.  I got to dress up in my wedding outfit, complete with flowered headband (which was a couple of fabric flowers that I got at Michael’s and attached to a headband purchased from Ulta).  Here’s a picture of me, Katie Jo, and Ann (we were all roommates together during my second year living in Philly):

Well, I’m off to have brunch with friends, so I can’t write more about my Philly adventures now.  Stay tuned this week though, when I get home I’ll be writing Alethea’s 2 year update and Lydia’s 4 month update.  That is, I’ll be writing those posts after I give the girls lots and LOTS of hugs and kisses.  I miss them even more than I thought I would!

Snow on May 1st

The weather here has been so neurotic lately.  It actually snowed on May 1st.  Today it is bright and sunny and 60 something degrees outside with just a light breeze.  Ahhhh….

The girls and I went outside this morning to enjoy the delicious day.

Alethea was thrilled to explore the backyard and push Baby Doll in the swing.

Lydia was content to sit in her carrier and watch the tree branches swaying above her and Alethea running by periodically.

What did I do?  Well, besides being photographer, I also pulled on some thick rubber gloves and did some landscaping clean-up in our back planting bed.  After removing lots of thorny nettles, other weeds, a rather large and scary looking brown beetle and random debris, we went from this:

To this:

All that’s left is a pink Bleeding Heart and six Hostas that I discovered hiding underneath the nettles.  What to do with it next….  hmmm…

The Final Selection

I’ve got my shoes!  I went to Herberger’s to try on this pair:

Unfortunately, the color was very different in person.  The part that looked almost white on the website actually had a very yellow undertone that I didn’t like at all.

But as long as I was there I went ahead and tried on the Bandolino from my first post and what do you know, they were even cuter in person and reasonably comfortable too!  So now this is my official outfit:

Only problem is I have yet to locate a flower hair accessory that I like.  Tried Target.  Where else to go?  Walmart? Ulta?

Yet Another Shoe Post

Sorry for so many shoe posts lately, but I just found another pair on Herberger’s website that is too cute!

I think I like this shoe best yet, but wondering how comfortable they would be:

I definitely need to go try them on!

And the (Possible) Winner Is…

I went to DSW looking for the Seychelles Stella Wedge Pump from my previous post, but it turns out that it was on clearance in the store and they didn’t have my size anymore.  Plus I found a pair not in my size just to look at and I didn’t like them as well in person anyway.

However, I did browse through the store and located this shoe instead:

Impo Granduer Wedge Sandal in Taupe

Not as dressy as I was originally trying for, but they are super duper comfy and I love the taupe color.  Also, I think it’s a shoe that I would wear a lot with jeans and other things.

After buying the shoes I went to a couple stores searching for jewelry and ended up getting two necklaces at the Limited, a shorter one and a longer one that look cool layered together.

I’m also thinking about getting a cute fabric flower for my hair.  So my complete outfit would be this:

So now my only question is, is the shoe too casual for the dress?  I’m not worried that it’s too casual for the wedding, it being a day time affair with a block party style outdoor reception following, I think it will be fairly laid-back.  But can you wear a cork wedge with a black sheath?

Please tell me if you think this look works or not, because I still have time to go shoe shopping again if I need to, but I’d rather do it now than at the last minute!
