Flashback to 2003…
I had a pet blue Beta fish named Smurf.
He looked a bit like this:
He died in March. It was sad, but he passed on Easter weekend and lived a good long life, well, for a fish anyway.
I thought I should give him a proper burial, but the ground was still frozen, so I put him in a plastic bag in my parents deep freezer to await a spring thaw.
…
My mom called today.
She was cleaning out their freezer.
She found Smurf.
The ground is frozen. He’s not getting a burial.
I thought the least I could do was give him a blog post.
Goodbye old friend. You were a good fish. I’m sorry you spent seven years in my parents freezer.
May you rest in peace.
Elise, I had one of those. He or she was the center of my dinning room table. It was in a big vase with what is called peace plant that it would nibble on along with the food that I feed it. I called it Lola. I had it for three years. I was living in an apartment than so I buried it in the pot with my rubber plant that died four years later.
Pearl – way to be a good pet owner and give your fish a proper burial. :-) Maybe I should have tried the potted plant route too.
I laughed out loud. Great post. I wonder when the top of our wedding cake will turn up (it’s been in there 10 so far).
Quite frankly, I am disturbed that my wedding cake has been coexisting in the freezer with a dead fish…maybe one of them should have been flushed down the toilet? :)
Julie – LOL! It’s not too late for the cake! :-)
Once your cake has been in the freezer for 10 years, does it even matter that it was in there with a fish?
Peter, I’m thinking not.
Elise, unrelated to your post (which is cute), I was in CA, and I sent your book to church via leaving it in the car for Paul to remember, and I heard he forgot! I’m sorry! I’ll make sure you get it this week.
Maybe it’s different (I’d certainly feel differently about a dead cat, dog, guinea pig etc.), but the cake has been sharing the freezer with dead cows, pigs and shrimp too. Also, I know exactly where the cake is and am willing to produce it any time you are ready for it. Wrappped in fondant, plastic, and a tupperware bowl, it may still be good!
I must say, your ten year anniversary would have been the ideal time to give it to you. Shall we go for the 15th?
