How to Pick a Name

When we were trying to pick a name for Alethea, I devised a method of ruling out names so that Peter and I didn’t have to go around in circles.  I would propose a category and he would deem it “In” or “Out”.

“Out” categories when we were working on picking Alethea’s name included:

Cities/States/Countries – so no London, Georgia, Jordan

French Names – Isabella, Gabriella (which I love, by the way)

Gem Stones – Ruby, Jade, Topaz

Fruits/Vegetables – Apple, Pear, Peach

Flowers other than ‘Rose’ – Lily, Peony, Aster

And anything Peter felt falls under the “Stage Names of Adult Entertainers” category, which he seems to think is rather broader than I do, but I had to agree that we didn’t want our daughter’s name to sound like a stripper.

Now that we are expecting another girl, I went back and checked with Peter and the same categories are still “out”.  So now I need some new categories to work with.  Luckily though, I overheard a conversation yesterday that may help me greatly.  I was at the doctor’s office for my check-up and a woman was in the waiting room with a little girl about Alethea’s age.  One of the nurses came out and saw them and said “Oh hi [insert name], is this your baby?” To which the woman responded, “Yes, this is Indigo.”

COLORS!  There have got to be about a gazillion options there.  Obviously there are your basic ROYGBIV colors, but thinking beyond that we get to such amazing names as Cerulean, Periwinkle and my personal favorite Burnt Umber.  I would of course also suggest Aquamarine, but as that probably falls under both the Gem Stones and Adult Entertainment categories, I think it’s already out.

Just for fun, leave me a comment letting me know what color you would pick if you had to name a kid after a Crayola Crayon.  I need options!

  1. I’m loving all of these! (Although I too am wondering if many of them get disqualified based on the no flowers/fruit rule.) I do have to think about what Green Apple’s nick name could be though. Green? Appy? We’ll work on it.

  2. Poppa John asks about Sienna(burnt, but you can leave that part off) and I kind of liked Cerise. Yellow Green is always an option too!:-)

  3. Turquoise almost sounds more like a boy’s name to me, but yes, a bit hippy perhaps!

I do like Sienna, but I bet you anything Peter wouldn’t go for it. Cerise is cute too, but I had to look up how to pronounce it, so I’m guessing she’d be forever spelling it out. Not that I should talk, Alethea will always be explaining her name too!

  4. Hmmm, I hadn’t thought about autos. I’m not sure that I even need Peter to rule that one out, although Elise is the name of a super cute sports car, so you never know!

  5. The baby’s name will be a secret, but any easy one to keep since we really don’t have any clue what her name will be right now anyway!

  6. How about Orange? Then it can’t be rhymed by other kids. Like Bese Elise. Moving on…

Turquise is not a boys name. I don’t think. I guess you could call him Turq, which would be okay .

How about Beers? She could be Amber B. Won’t fly at our house :) (Not that I’d want to)

Or Wines? How about Zynfindel? Shiraz? :)

  7. Pulling out hated childhood nicknames is not very nice! Besides, nonsense words can rhyme with anything, include orange.

Beers and wines, huh? Well, it’s not a category I’ve suggested to Peter, so I’ll have to run it by him, but I personally think Shiraz as a woman’s name sounds a bit like it might go in the “Adult Entertainment” category.

  8. My question is- what made Peter so difficult to deal with? :)

What works for us is that I pick a name and just say it a lot over 9 months and he eventually comes to love it too. Or maybe that happened once.

  9. Little did Noah know, perhaps, that Orange is actually a family name… Orange Otis Wheatley was in the generation of Barbara Bailey, your great grandmother. His aunt was Elizabeth Wheatley Shepperd, your great-great grandma. If I remember right, Orange changed his name as an adult. Happy naming!!

  10. How about the category “family names”? Could be first or last names. Some first names that come to mind: Honora, Magdalen (Madeline), Ingeborg, Charlotte (oops, city), Huldah, Rosalie, Johanna, Helen, Barbara (had to throw that one out there.)

  11. Oh, my! There are some names to avoid in that list. What’s your name little girl? Hul-duh! (no offense intended to your relative). When I was pregnant with McCrea I considered Burson, Jensen (of which I know several now), and Hansen. I would have named a girl Ingeborg and called her Inga, but my girls shutter at the prospect. So, I have found THEE family name for you! ZOLA… A and Z…she was the daughter of Orange Otis, actually, and his wife Nola. She was Zola Elizabeth. Zola Elise would work….:)Barb votes for it too. There are lots of Zoe’s so it would be different but not weird compared to other girls of her generation.

  12. You could go with some of the family names on our side, pretty different also: Lena, Sena, Ruby, Lula, Goldie(sounds like a dog!?), Hazel. too bad its not a boy: Kermit( was a pretty neat uncle,) Claron, Clarence, Conrad, Maurice, August Victor. and lots of George’s on all sides. Caroline was always a favorite of John’s. A search of both family trees would be really interesting.

  13. I still think Orange is out, even if it is a family name and I can’t say that I’m crazy about Zola either, but I’ll have to ask Peter what he thinks. Caroline is a pretty name. I guess we’ll have to see if she looks like a Caroline when she arrives.
