Finding the Perfect Pumpkin

Today Peter, Alethea and I went to a local farm to pick out Alethea’s Halloween pumpkin.

We looked through piles of pumpkins:

Peter suggested this one:

But in the end Alethea picked two that were just the right size to carry around by herself:

I told Peter that we should count our blessings.  Next year she’ll probably want the biggest (translate, most expensive) pumpkin in the place.

But for now, she’s easy to please and once she made her choices, she even consented to sit still for a minute and have her picture taken:

How sweet is that?

Mommy’s Little Fashion Consultant

I’m about ready to walk out the door for a very welcome girls night out with some friends.  I had Alethea help me get dressed.  When I asked her whether I should wear the pearl necklace or the purple beads, she very decisively said “Purple.”

I said, “I do like the purple, but I think maybe the pearls are the way to go in this case.  So, why don’t we try both and see which one is better?”

Now after Thursday’s fashion incident (see my previous post), you can understand why I wanted to form my own decision, but you know what, she was right… the purple beads were definitely the right necklace choice.

I told her, “You were right, the purple beads are better for this outfit.”

She replied, “Purple!” with a look that said, “How could you have doubted me?”

I probably shouldn’t be surprised.  This is likely only the start of Alethea being my fashion consultant.

“Oh mom, don’t wear that, that is sooooo 2010…”

Fashion Forward

Alethea has recently been showing an interest in putting clothing items on by herself.  She likes to put shirts on her head and wrap socks around her ankle, and while she hasn’t come terribly close to actually getting anything on correctly, it doesn’t seem to discourage her from trying.

So, this morning I had Alethea all dressed up in a cute polka dot dress and cute purple leggings.  She looked ready to take on the world, or at least conquer her first ECFE class.

Then while I was getting myself dressed, she got into my basket of waiting-to-be-folded laundry and accessorized:

Notice how Alethea’s modelesque pose perfectly accents the rather avant-garde undies neckwear she’s showcasing.

I really think this could be the next big thing…

However I didn’t let her wear it out of the house.

Highlights of the Week

This morning Alethea and I ran errands.  It took a bit longer than I had anticipated and it was getting close to nap time, but Alethea was a trooper and seemed to have a good time.  On the ride home she actually almost fell asleep… without a nuk… and without whining for one.  I don’t think that’s ever happened before, even in the car.  Maybe we’ll actually be able to take it away from her before she goes off to college.

One of our errands this morning was to the Home Depot.  Alethea’s big girl room closet only has two shelves, so I took in the wire shelf that we removed from the mud room closet and had it cut to size for its new location.  Glad we threw it into storage instead of getting rid of it.  So nice to make an improvement without spending money!

Speaking of cheap improvements, we did pick up a $30 chair on Craigslist for Alethea’s room, so now I just need to find a bookshelf and possibly a nightstand to complete my furniture hunt.  I’m feeling good about the deals we’ve gotten, but after putting together a spreadsheet with all my expenses thus far, I was disappointed to discover that I had spent more than I’d realized.  I’m beginning to think that on the TV design shows where they have a tight budget, they must not factor in things like paint brushes and roller covers into their proudly announced “Grand Totals”.  It’s crazy how those little things add up.

Tomorrow Alethea and I are planning on going to our first Early Childhood Family Education class together.  I’m hoping some time away from the house playing with other kids will help improve her mood, which has been more miss than hit lately.

As far as hits and misses go, it sure would be nice if the Twins could actually manage to get enough of the former to finally win a post-season game at home against the Yankees.  I guess there’s always tomorrow.

How Things Change

When Alethea was an infant she couldn’t stand to be in her bouncy seat.  I’d heard so much about kids who would happily sit in them for hours.  With Alethea we were lucky to get a few minutes out of it.  Perhaps she was just introduced to it too soon:

Changing Seasons

The other night Alethea helped me change out the sea shells on the dining room table for a more seasonally appropriate centerpiece.  She really enjoyed playing with the fake cranberries (yeah, I know, they look more like crab apples).

And she was able to follow my instructions when I asked her to take the cranberries out of the box and put them in the jars.

When we were done we were happy with the results:

Or rather, I was happy with the results and Alethea was upset that she didn’t get to play with the cranberries anymore.

My Favorite Soup – A Recipe

For my birthday a couple weeks ago (ack, I’m 29!) Peter gave me this immersion blender:

Tonight I used it to make my favorite soup and man, did it ever make this recipe so much easier.  No more transferring hot soup batch by batch into the blender and ending up with a huge mess in the kitchen.  All it took was a few seconds with my new toy and the soup was ready to eat.  I love it!

I was going to take pictures of how good this soup looks in the bowl, but since our camera battery is dead and I couldn’t find the charger, you’ll have to take my word for it.  It’s such a pretty shade of orange!

Sweet Potato and Red Pepper Soup
2 red bell peppers (about 8 oz), seeded and cubed
generous 4 cups diced sweet potatoes
1 onion, roughly chopped
3 large garlic cloves, minced
1 1/4 cups dry white wine
1 1/4 quarts (5 cups) vegetable or chicken stock*
Frank’s RedHot sauce
salt and freshly ground black pepper

* I usually use chicken stock for the flavor, but to make the soup vegetarian, use vegetable stock.

Put the red pepper, sweet potatoes, onion, garlic, wine and stock into a large sauce pan or stock pot and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 30 minutes or until all the vegetables are soft.  Transfer the soup in batches to a blender (or use a handy immersion blender!) and process until smooth.  Season to taste with hot sauce, salt and pepper.  Transfer to individual bowls and garnish with a dash or two (or ten) of hot sauce.

Peter and I enjoy this with lots of hot sauce, but you can tone it down if you like.  It’s fantastic served with crusty bread or Roasted Garlic Triscuits.

Fabulous Craigslist Find

I’ve been doing a lot of Craigslist searching for a mirror, chair and bookcase for Alethea’s big girl room.  Today, I brought home what I think is a fantastic find.

What was simply listed as “Walnut Mirror 43 H x 24 W” …

Turned out to be a sweet white haired grandmother’s 100 year old beveled edge mirror with solid walnut frame and tons of wavy discolored glass character!

$30 later, Alethea and I had it loaded in the trunk and we were headed homeward.

The only problem is that it’s so cool, I’m half considering putting it somewhere else in the house.

Seventeen Month Update

Today is Alethea’s seventeen month birthday.  Happy Birthday, Baby Girl!

Alethea’s big accomplishment this month was learning the word ‘no’.  It is her new favorite word and sometimes I think she answers questions with it just because she knows she can.  Still, I don’t mind that she learned it.  It is fun to watch her growing self-awareness and independence.

Her other favorite current favorite word is ‘baby’.  She says it so much it has become almost meaningless, but I think she does have some idea what it means.  The other night she pointed at Peter and said “Da-yee” and then at me and said “Mommy”.  Then I asked her, “Who are you?” She pointed to herself and said “Baby.”  However, the age group that is encompassed by the word ‘baby’ for Alethea is a bit larger than the usual definition.  The other day we were walking through a parking lot and Alethea saw a little girl (probably about 3 or 4 years old) and pointed to her as she exclaimed “Baby!”  The girl was quite insulted and turned to her mother to indignantly say, “That little girl just called me a baby!  I’m not a baby!!!”

We’ll find out next month when she has her eighteen month check up whether she is in a growth spurt or not, but I really think she is or will hit it soon.  Mainly I think so because she generally eats two or three times more at any given meal than she did just three weeks ago.  But also I think she seems a bit taller too.

While we don’t know if she’s grown physically, we can tell she is constantly processing information and is increasingly communicating it as well.  The other day I was quizzing her on colors of objects around us and after talking about her pink coat and blue toy, I held up my water bottle and asked her “Alethea, what color is this?”  Without missing a beat, she responded “Eh-woh” (yellow).  And she was right, it was yellow.  I was super impressed and made a big deal out of it, but then after that every object I asked about was ‘yellow’.  *Note to self, don’t overreact when child answers question correctly or child will expect the same response every time he or she uses that answer.

One of Alethea’s most requested activities is to watch Elmo on TV.  While I’m not crazy about my child being so enamored with a TV character, it does have its upsides.  For example, we were having a really hard time getting Alethea to let us brush her teeth at night.  Then I discovered a toddler toothbrush and toothpaste with Elmo on it and now she can’t wait to brush her teeth before bed.

Besides Elmo and babies, Alethea also loves her same favorites: puppies, Grandma, playing the piano, going outsides, cars & trucks, balls, books and anything that doesn’t look like a toy (i.e. food containers, cooking utensils, papers, boxes, etc.)

She seems excited about her new room, although I’m pretty sure at this point she views both her big girl room and the nursery as belonging to her.  However, I’m hoping as we get more furniture moved into her new room she’ll find it increasingly interesting.

We do tell her on a regular basis that a baby is coming to live with us and that she is going to be a big sister, but we’re still pretty sure the words don’t mean a whole lot to her yet.  Only time will tell if her current love of babies will survive actually having one in the house, but we are encouraging it nonetheless.

Well, I think that’s all for this month.  Stay tuned as always for the continuing adventures of Alethea Margaret!
